Sashiko exists(ed) in the ordinary. There is nothing wrong with being particular about “one stitch”, but I get puzzled when they focus on just one stitch to be either “Perfect” or “Imperfect”. The question asking me for the “right size” for Sashiko stitch also puzzles me as we do not really focus on “one stitch” only. We care & pay attention to each stitch, but they are a part of the whole… Therefore, I keep mentioning the importance of the “whole” on top of the comfortable/convenient information.
☆
Good news is that anyone can learn the Sashiko we practice relatively easily. It doesn’t require years (or even months) of practice. Once they learn the Form & Mindset, completing some project like the photo will be enough to “master” it – once they master it, it is the start of finding their own. I teach the preparation to be on the start-line, for that matter. Please be advised that the Online Sashiko Class will have a price adjustment after this weekend. Please check @upcyclestitches to take the “Price Fixing” Offer to honor the current price after the price adjustment. Thank you!

I hope you had moments to mull over the Mind-Food in the previous post. When will Sashiko be “completed”? How/When did Japanese consider it (Sashiko) to be done or completed? Again, there is no absolute answer. We have only imagination. However, the imagination & stories will teach us the importance of supplies & tools. They developed the tools & supplies for reasons, and here is one reason I keep saying, [Sashiko Thread Matter].
☆
In my understanding, there is no “end/competition” in Sashiko. There are many stop-over stations in its life, but they aren’t the final destination. If I were to set the final destination, it is probably in the trash (or in the ground or in the air as ash). The form right before the trash is well known as “Boro” – which now has a different meaning in English. Sashiko exists in the ordinary, and therefore the Sashiko completes in its usage. Sashiko thread also plays its role in usage, not right after the stitching.
☆
Sashiko can be the “Art”, but for the reasons above, I do not consider Sashiko as the Art so much. In principle, Sashiko needs to be used – and after all, Sashiko is “consumable goods”. It is perfectly fine to embrace the beautiful looking. However, it is very sad & dangerous when one ignores the stories behind, and say “Thread does not matter as it will make the same looking”. Our Sashiko Threads make a significant difference for the immediate result. Moreover, the difference becomes more significant in 5, or 10 years of using it. Why do I have this story? It is our Sashiko Artisans who spent so much time contributing to the Sashiko Thread.
☆
*Our Sashiko Threads have only one thickness, twist and materials – just different colors both natural & artificial.
☆
**Our Online Sashiko Class will have new pricing on 5/14 – check @upcyclestitches to receive “Price Fixing” Offer. Thank you!

As I mentioned in the previous Live Streaming, I plan to change my style of sharing a bit. In Japan, I realized there are so many more Sashiko Stories that I would like to share. One big difference is “involving” others. For that, I feel a sense of “responsibility”. [Sashiko Story] may be more than my personal place to share our own story. For that, I would like to focus on the concept of “Delivering” the message on top of leaving the stories behind. For that, I may repeat the same story over and over – so that the Core & Essence of the Sashiko Stories may penetrate into the “common sense” in the current trend.
☆
One of the most important messages is… [Sashiko Thread Matters]. Many people discuss the purpose of using the Sashiko Thread. Some say any thread is fine for Sashiko. As Sashiko becomes the trend, many manufactures start labeling their thread as “Sashiko Thread”. I want to present a list of reasons why we, as Japanese Sashiko Artisans, call specific threads as Sashiko Threads. Threads matter significantly in Sashiko so I say I won’t continue my Sashiko without the thread we use now. You can find the “reasons” on our web, and I will come back here. One mindfood is… it matters when we think of “when” we complete Sashiko. A majority of people say/think they “complete” Sashiko right after stitching. Is it so? Did Sashiko develop like that? There are no answers, but many stories in the form of “Culture”. The “Sashiko Thread” will make a significant difference. (Our Sashiko Thread is available via @UpcycleStitches .)

I have been very busy catching up with the regular work that I had skipped while I was in Japan. The more I work, the stronger I realize… not only do I like Sashiko, but I also “enjoy” Sashiko. Before 2011, Sashiko was “business” to me: “business” like a vehicle to get enough money to sustain the family business. After I lost everything once in 2013, Keiko and I restarted the “Sashiko” – and it was just “Sashiko” as practice. No purpose attached to the stitching itself. We stitched because we enjoyed it.
☆
Keiko is still that way. I work hard so that she can stay that way. Someone gotta do the “work” to keep it sustainable, especially in the market where people stitch for other purposes. I have seen & met many Sashiko artisans, who are struggling to make ends meet, yet so great in their stitching. They are “the” artisans, without the vehicle to make it sustainable. Their Sashiko is genuine. Here, no words are necessary. Once we see it, we understand it. Keiko’s Sashiko is so powerful and attractive because of this – that she enjoys stitching itself.
☆
I sometimes wish to be like them – nameless artisans who focus on stitching. Then, I realize the possibility of losing the actual stories about Sashiko. As much as I enjoy stitching, I cannot be just stitching… until the day I find someone to replace me, or until the world acknowledges the stories & support the artisans. I am here to “balance” it – so I will lose the voice when I stop stitching. I will keep stitching & sharing stories… otherwise, the culture may be completely lost at some point.
☆
*For those waiting for the update, I am working on it! I appreciate your patience.

In the Sashiko Live Streaming last night, I made a silly Freudian slip, which may sound contradicting to what I am doing now. Although I try to speak up loudly the importance of understanding “something missing in Sashiko” in today’s Sashiko trend, I feel that I have achieved my goal already. The goal is to “pass down” the Sashiko we have been practicing. I will keep sharing the stories, techniques, and mindset that consist of our Sashiko… but unlike 2019 when I first learned the concept of “Cultural Appropriation”, I feel very “content” in what I do. I have a LOT to do & share, but I am not devastated like before. We still need support in many forms, but I have hopes, which I thought I would never have.
☆
Thanks to many people who learned Sashiko from us in the last 6 years, and those who have been enjoying Sashiko in the way we try to pass down, the Sashiko we practice will be “preserved” even if I disappear tomorrow. The gathering in Japan, with both Japanese & Non-Japanese students I have shared Sashiko, clarified that the Sashiko we practice exist in their hands, minds, and ordinary. So, I slipped my tongue yesterday that I am already “satisfied”.
☆
It doesn’t mean that I will stop sharing the Sashiko Stories though. I learned more and more stories around Sashiko, and the other “Sashiko” which aren’t introduced in English. I learned how “filtered” and “selected” Sashiko in English by non-Japanese who benefit from this cultural simplification. My time from now on will be used for their Sashiko as well. For that, I am satisfied with “my own goal” for now, yet I build up more dreams on me. As I promise, I will never stop stitching Sashiko.

While talking to many (rising) Sashiko artisans in Japan, I started seeing a boundary between what we are trying to do & what the other “Sashiko Teachers” are doing. I have been trying to explain the difference in “teaching” as a professional or as a guide. However, it didn’t explain the whole picture of struggles I feel – and now, this boundary may make more sense to me.
☆
The “teaching” today, in many cases, have become a form of “amusement” – like an attraction in the amusement park. Let’s say that we visit a theme park of “Japanese Traditional Crafting”, and Sashiko or Boro is an attraction (a ride) to entertain the visitors. When I see today’s trend in Sashiko, it makes sense why I get so much push back (or intentional ignorance) for what I speak up. They don’t want Sashiko to be more than “a fun ride” whereas I am trying to teach them how to “drive” the ride by themselves.
☆
Again, this isn’t a matter of good or bad. It is simply a different approach to “practice”. If they want to have fun with the ride (Sashiko), that’s perfectly fine. It is a good way to start “enjoying” it. The problem occurs when an amusement park starts advertising themselves as “the whole (teachers)” while hiding their initial purpose of “amusing visitors”. As much as I want my workshop to be a fun experience, my workshop will still be “difficult (uncomfortable)” for many people. My goal is to leave the culture & people behind. Here, in a “Sashiko Park” we try to protect, I want everyone to be able to make a “ride” – not just enjoying the ride for temporary. It exists in the “ordinary (reality)” – not the dreams.

One of the biggest learnings in Japan this spring was from the master of Koginsashi – Takagi Sensei & members of Mokuyoukai. The Instagram post is a bit “instantaneous” to share what the learning from them is… but it is indeed the moment of “change” in my Sashiko Life.
☆
Since 2019, I have been saying that there are so many stories that I have shared only 10% of those (from my experience). Now, while learning from other masters, I have more and more stories to share. Well, I have enough materials to share with spending all of my life now, I guess. There is so much more than what we think we know in Sashiko – and of course, in many other practices & cultures. It is “people”, and stories following, after all.

When someone say Sashiko is easy, when “a Sashiko master” define the answer to Sashiko, when some publish/advertise their Sashiko as “Ultimate” or “Comprehensive”, I find a big empty space… the Sashiko I received, the Sashiko my family & friends had spent so much time on, do not exists in the Sashiko described/introduced in English. “Answers” are easy to follow, but when “Answers” are made by “foreigners (here, people who do not share the same language & culture)”, the practice itself will be limited, and worse, will be lost. I imagine it isn’t only about Sashiko – it is happening everywhere.
☆
In 14 days of my Japan Stay, I carefully & purposefully chose whom to visit. I wanted to learn from someone who isn’t known (or who isn’t willing to be known) in Sashiko. It is my dream to visit everyone who practices Sashiko in Japan. However, with limited time & money, the priority is those who do not have “voices” yet – the Sashiko that exist, yet not introduced in English.
☆
The language is a “power”. English is so strong that they can change the culture. I benefit from it, and I want to use this power to include everyone – unfortunately, the trend in Sashiko is so fast that it’s leaving someone very important behind. My mission as “Sashiko Story” is no longer about me or my mother Keiko only. It has become more than my personal record. The Sashiko you know in English is NOT wrong, but very much insufficient. I am here to fill in the empty space as much as I can by introducing “unknown”.

How do we measure the success in “preserving the culture”? What does it take to saying “we preserved the culture”? This has been a long-lasting question. I am not 100% sure what I need to do to preserve the culture… However, a fortunate opportunity to spend time with Makoto-san in Japan was the moment of my dream. If we were to have more people who enjoy Sashiko in their ordinary, with pride and respect, the Sashiko we practice will be preserved. It even doesn’t need a “protection” – it will be there in 50 years when we acknowledge the power & beauty of Sashiko – for that, I would like to keep advocating the significance of Sashiko.
☆
It is interesting, though, that not “everyone” looks good with a Sashiko outfit. I don’t think I am well “developed” to wear such a heavy, gorgeous Sashiko Jacket. All I can do now is to wear some “lightly stitched” Sashiko items. It may be an accumulation of experience. It may be Japanese-ness. I don’t know what makes them fit… but I am now certain that this is the way to go. When more (Japanese) people find Sashiko attractive & apply it to their ordinary (not like the Fine Art in the fall, though), then the Sashiko we practice will be there in 50, or even 100 years from now. I really appreciate Makoto-san for sharing his ordinary, and of course Nana (@na.na_45) for making this Sashiko Jacket for him. Such a personal, and great way to conclude the time in Japan.

It took 10 years to go back to where I was from. Last 10 years, I have found many pieces of happiness with my direct family, my wife and daughter. I guess I was scared of going back to the place where I had been feeling lonely. To be honest, I am still not okay to be there for a long time. But, at least, I had courage to be there.
☆
Without these participants to this series of Sashiko Workshops in Japan, I wouldn’t have made any of this Japan Tour happen. I may have lost the sense of family once in Japan… but thanks to them, I have a bigger sense of family throughout spending great 12 days together.
☆
Sashiko can be “anything” like an Art to express oneself, Crafting to maximize one’s creativity, a vehicle to meditate, Sustainable Solution for the Fashion & Environment… It is not me who defines the answer for that. For me, Sashiko is a practice that once destroyed my family, and now a practice to find many other family members. Sashiko is more than just ”stitching” for some Japanese. I know I am not the only Japanese for that. Therefore, my goal is to pass down the Sashiko we practice to include everyone – not to leave any Japanese Sashiko artisans behind. I will go back to happiness in the U.S. soon. While showing the Sashiko we practice in Japan to 8 new family members, I found so many “challenges” standing in front of me. I will change myself a bit, from only focusing on “our” Sashiko – so that I can connect the “dots” to share the Sashiko we practice.
