The best way to start & review Sashiko

Sashiko Workshop Spring 2018 _ Cover 1

There are several Sashiko books and tutorials available in the market. I also offer some online tutorials on our Youtube Channel.

However, the best way to start and review Sashiko is to see how the Sashiko (repair) artist do Sashiko every day. Sashiko was too ordinary for Japanese people to establish the structure. Therefore, we can see many types of Sashiko from many communities in Japan. The common concept is that the Japanese developed Sashiko to repair, strength, mend, and decorate fabric with appreciation.

Since there is no such a thing as “Right” and “Wrong” in Sashiko, it can be confusing to learn.

Atsushi offers what is the best way to keep enjoying Sashiko in terms of its technique, supplies, and tips to increase “enjoyment” in your Sashiko. Unless you are absolutely 100% confident in using Sashiko needle & thimble, the workshop will be a great opportunity to start & review Sashiko.

On our Youtube Channel, you can see how we use the Sashiko Needle & Thimble.

Sashiko Workshop Spring 2018 | Next is Summer 2018

Sashiko Workshop Spring 2018

My schedule for May and June is pretty packed already.

The possible Sashiko Workshop in NYC is at the end of July or in August. Since I do not live in NYC, I can offer the workshops only a few times a year. I offer an option to have the private workshop, but joining the workshops in NYC will be the easiest and cheapest option among my offers.

It will be nice Spring day (hopefully) in NYC.

If it is a sunny day, stitching time on the balcony may be available. The host of the workshop may be able to offer this beautiful surprise. Please do not miss this great opportunity to enjoy Sashiko Stitching with Atsushi.

Please be noted that your registration is required to attend the workshop.

Thank you & I am looking forward to meeting you there.

Online Sashiko Class

With many requests from all over the world, I have developed Online Sashiko Class in 2020. Ever since, I have received quite many positive feedbacks. I am now confident that I can offer the identical experience via Online.

Please read the registration description & terms very carefully. To be honest, It is a challenge for me to offer the Sashiko Class online, without confirming how you are feeling. I would like to make everyone happy (as much as I can). So, please read them & ask me questions in advance to avoid any unfortunate misunderstanding.

Please contact me when you are ready to have me

I sincerely appreciate the increase of interest in Sashiko Stitching and my Sashiko Workshops.

I used to say, “please feel free to contact me with any small questions!” Although I feel the same, the increase of contacts ended up with no further reaction takes up so much of my time. Please contact me when you are ready to have me. It is perfectly fine if the workshop doesn’t work out because of a scheduling or financial conflict. I understand that.

However, not getting a reply after scheduling myself causes troubles and it may negatively affect the possibility of keep offering the workshop. I usually make a reply within a day. Please try to be on the track if you decided to contact me.

Thank you for your understanding & I am looking forward to work for/with you.

Sashiko Exhibition

Sashiko Exhibition with Otsuchi | The Power of Sashiko

The big earthquake hit Northeast Japan, almost 7 years ago, a cold day in March. In a process of recovering from this tragedy, Sashiko helped a group of people in small town, Otsuchi. We are honored to announce that the Otsuchi recovery Sashiko project hosts their Sashiko Exhibition to reiterated our condolences, to remember what happened.

(Original English Announcement: The detail is on en.sashico.com | Sashi.co & Keiko Futatsuya)

*What is Sashiko?

The power of hand-crafting |

Otsuchi Sashiko Project had successfully created “a community” where survivors of Tsunami get together and practice Sashiko.

“We would like to deliver a fishing rod instead of a fish”

After receiving so grateful support supplies from in&out of Japan, we focused on how to bring them to “normal,” which seemed to be almost impossible. I don’t think we have brought them to “normal” but we are sure that we could help them physically and psychologically through Sashiko and hand-crafting. We surely see the power of Sashiko.

Every Sashiko items are all handmade.

There are similar designs, but they are all one of a kind Sashiko items, which is actually Sashiko art.

We are happy to introduce the Sashiko items in general public so people and touch, feel, and appreciate the precious works.

Sashiko Exhibition Flyer 1

Sashiko Exhibition Flyer 2

Sashiko artist, Keiko Futatsuya, will be in the gallery on March 10th and 18th.

The manager of Otsuchi Sashiko Project will be attending the lecture and opening on March 10th.

It is an event in Japanese, but it is a rare opportunity to enjoy the actual & traditional Sashiko items.

Sashiko Exhibition for anyone | in Gifu Prefecture

The Sashiko exhibition is open for free admission during March 10th to 18th between 10 am to 6 pm. The location of the gallery is not convenient for non-Japanese, but please contact us for the locations if you happen to be in Japan, in Gifu prefecture.

We will take photos and show our Sashiko arts.

I always get encouraged by all of your voices (feedbacks & reviews) for my Sashiko Workshop. For those who are my Sashiko Workshop Graduates, please make sure that you receive the follow-up e-mails within 7 days after the workshop.

As I mentioned in the workshop, my goal is for you to keep enjoying Sashiko even after the workshop.

My Sashiko Workshop Graduates & the follow-up e-mails.

I usually get the e-mail address of participants throughout my online store when you purchase the seat. However, from time to time, I do not get the correct e-mail address because of typo or hand-writing. (Remember, I am a foreigner… hahaha.)

I send a follow-up e-mail as soon as I get back to home. The process completes within 7 days at most. If you do not receive any e-mail from me, it is either the e-mail address I have is incorrect, or the e-mail got into your junk e-mail box.

If you do not receive the e-mail, please contact me via the contact information on my business card. If you don’t have my business card, simply contact me through this website.

Contact to Atsushi | Upcycle Stitches

What you can expect in Sashiko Workshop Basic & Core

You will learn how to enjoy Sashiko Stitching from an actual Sashiko Artist. Since we started introducing our Sashiko techniques in 2012, some of the technique you will learn will widen your hand-sewing possibilities.

I created a landing webpage for our Sashiko Workshops. It summarizes what we do.

As I repeat saying this, there is no such a thing as “rule” in Sashiko Stitching.

There are, however, the technique and procedures which maximize the Sashiko stitching in terms of productivity, the beautiful result, and efficiency. We would like to share how we enjoy our Sashiko so that you will enjoy Sashiko more.

The Sashiko Workshop Basic & Core is the best way to start & re-learn what Sashiko is.

Happy Voices from the graduates

Since I made the workshop registration pages a few weeks ago, we haven’t received many reviews… However, we got all “hand-writing” good reviews and also great 2 online reviews. Here are some happy voices cited from online reviews. Thank you for those who left the reviews!

This was a great foundation for Sashiko beginners (techniques and a bit of history and purpose as well. Atsushi is warm, humorous and knows his stuff.

I really enjoyed the class. Atsushi was an excellent instructor. He demonstrated the proper technique and gave a lot of encouraging feedback on how we could improve or make the process even more efficient and comfortable.

Sashiko is fun way to appreciate fabric & mindful time

Our goal is to introduce what Sashiko is and pass it down to next generation. The more people enjoy Sashiko, the bigger chance we have to pass it down to our children & their children. Hand-sewing and appreciation to what we have is our foundation as a human being, I believe.

I hope to meet & see you in New York!

So much Passion. So Grateful to offer the Workshop.

As you know, Sashiko has been part of my life.

It is so interesting to receive so much passion Sashiko. The Sashiko arts we create are getting popular, and I am so happy that the people would like to learn our technique and culture. Over the Sashiko Workshops in Tribeca, November 2017, we had a TV crew to film a short introduction of Sashiko in the United States. Atsushi will be on TV.

Be part of our Sashiko group (before Atsushi gets so busy… just kidding) by checking the Sashiko Workshop Schedule 2018.

Sashiko Workshop Schedule 2018 4

Always, the goal is to share the fun of Sashiko

Regardless of the popularity of our Sashiko art or Sashiko culture, the goal is always the same. “We would like to share the fun culture of Sashiko.”

In order to introduce what Sashiko is, we offer the free Youtube Video as well as the articles on this website. However, in order to “feel” the fun of Sashiko, participating the workshop is the best way.

Every time, we get more confident that what we offer can satisfy anyone who is interested in Sashiko, even for those who have some Sashiko experience already. There is no such a thing as “right” or “wrong” in Sashiko. However, there is techniques we developed over time to make it more beautiful, easy, and after all enjoyable.

Please consider our workshop as an opportunity to enjoy Sashiko more.

If you don’t know anything about Sashiko, it is the great way to start. If you already know about Sashiko, then it is a great way to add the technique and knowledge to your art-work.

Sashiko Workshop Schedule 2018 7

We had had more than 20 workshops in the previous year, with almost 100 people participated.

There are no negative reviews in our brief “after workshop questioner”. We are getting confident in what we do!!

Sashiko Workshop Schedule 2018 | Let us plan more

Since the instructor Atsushi is located in the central PA, where is about 4 hours of driving away from NYC,  we cannot offer the workshops every weekend (We wish we could!). In addition, Atsushi’s main role, for now, is to be a stay-at-home father. Realistically speaking, offering Sashiko Workshops 3 ~ 4 times a year is a reasonable amount to plan the schedule.

However, we are willing to offer as many workshops as possible. Even more than 4 times per year if there is a need.

In order to do so, we need a certain amount of participant in the workshops. We would like to know how many people in the East Coast are willing to join the Sashiko Workshops. Please share your passion by posting comments here and/or registering yourself to our mailing list with checking “Yes” to the workshop notification.

We are looking forward to meeting you!

Let’s get together and learn how Sashiko Artist, Atsushi, creates one-of-a-kind denim.

Please bring your own materials to work on, patch on, or mend with.If you prefer working on just stitching, I will have some materials to work on for purchase.

The gathering comes with:

What to expect to the gathering:

Sashiko Mending Gathering is a fun and enjoyable time. It isn’t as structured as the other workshop I offer and you will work on your own project after Atsushi’s brief presentation. It is like an “Independent Study.” However, it will be informative gathering since Atsushi will be available for you to get you informed. (If you have attended Atsushi’s workshop, you know that he doesn’t stop talking even if you want him to.)

(If you have attended Atsushi’s workshop, you know that he doesn’t stop talking even if you want him to.)

What is the difference from the other Sashiko Workshops Atsushi offers?

Basic Sashiko Stitching Workshop (SSW) is the core Sashiko workshop Atsushi offer. If you are interested in Sashiko stitching, you need to take this workshop. In 3 hours of move-your-own-hand workshop, the participants learn how to use unique equipment such as long needles and a round shaped thimble.

The SSW is so important to learn Sashiko. Therefore I need to structure the workshop strictly enough so that every participant get the core of Sashiko. Therefore, the maximum participants are always limited to 6, and the SSW is a prerequisite to many of my workshops.

I designed Sashiko Mending Workshop (SMW) to meet the market demand for “Sashiko Mending” and therefore it was a pretty intensive workshop. My goal through SMW was to provide all the necessary information for participants to perform the mending at home, with Sashiko Stitching and Preparing Sashiko project by yourself. Because of its volume, we needed to cover the materials without talking into depth.

In 3 hours of SMW, we covered the presentation teaching how to…

  • prepare the fabric appropriately
  • transfer the patterns
  • use needles and thimble
  • practice the Sashiko running stitch
  • choose the right sashiko fabric for the mending
  • actual mending with some hand-stitching techniques
  • Mending itself

As you can imagine, in order to make these happen in 3 hours, I only can cover these materials briefly.

I still believe that SMW is a great workshop for many people, especially who wants to learn both Sashiko and mending simultaneously. I may offer them in the future again, but this time, I would like to focus on “enjoying” the mending with hints from Sashiko technique and culture.

Sashiko and Contemporary cloth mending

“Do people need our strict Sashiko stitching methods in mending?”

Interestingly, the answer is No.

Yes, our Sashiko stitching methods will be beneficial to know when you prepare the Sashiko stitched fabric or perform Sashiko stitching on the cloth directly. However, when he/she repair a hole on the jeans, I sometimes do not use the technique I teach in the workshop.

There is another challange to make “mending” as the structured workshop.

After going through the explanation and demonstration of “how to”, it becomes a sort of “independent study” because the participants work on their own clothes. Sashiko Mending Gathering is created for those who wanted to jump on their own mending project instead of learning the mending process I do.

Sashiko Mending Gathering is not as organized as the Sashiko Mending Workshop. I will spend the small time to “teach” you “how to”, which I usually offer in SMW. You will have a chance to learn (&see) how to use the thimble and needle correctly, too. I just do not “teach” you how to do that.

You will also have me to answer any kinds of questions regarding Sashiko and mending.

Let’s share the passion with new friends.

It is always a good surprise when I meet a group of people who share the same interest.

Repairing your own cloth is a very fun process. It will not only create the beautiful “One-of-a-kind” art piece you wear every day, but it also adds the value to the cloth with appreciation. The more I put stitching on my denim jeans, the more I love it to wear.

I hope you can join this opportunity to share your beautiful idea and lovely Sashiko project.
