“Winnipeg`s plan to consolidate health services involves significant changes, including the location and nature of many services and programs. These changes obviously have an impact on our staff. How these changes are managed is largely governed by collective agreements negotiated between the region and our union partners. We will not know the number of Health Assistance (HCA) positions until agreements have been reached with the unions, but we are aware that there are currently more than 100 vacancies for CHCs in our acute system – and additional vacancies in long-term care and home care – so we are confident that there will be opportunities for those affected. Both the region and the unions are working to create employment opportunities for as many employees as possible and to minimise negative effects on staff. “Members are scared, members are frustrated, members are angry. We knew we would have changes. We didn`t know they would be so vast. Certainly, there is a risk that members will lose their jobs or not be able to maintain the same level of employment they currently have. “Local 832 was founded in 1938 and had about 700 members until 1964, when Bernard Christophe was elected president. Christophe held the presidency of Local 832, until he finished his 38 years at the head of the local by resigning in 2002 [2]. He was replaced in the fall of 2002 by Robert Ziegler, who held the position until his recent retirement on December 1, 2011. .
