In journalism and digital media, the practice of hiring “Permalancers” has become a reality among publishers. These professionals are recruited on a temporary full-time basis, without benefits being granted to full-time workers, but are expected to work under the same conditions as traditional full-time employment. While labour law prohibits many liberal professions from joining well-established unions, members of the Writers Guild of America, East, still work in solidarity with freelance writers. The KBA is the result of a broad negotiation process between the parties on issues such as wages, hours and terms of employment. Although wages and benefits are often the main concern of professionals in collective bargaining, union members raise many other employment issues through the collective bargaining process and other forms of bargaining. Philadelphia Orchestra players, members of the American Federation of Musicians are able to earn annual salary increases over the duration of the four-year contract they signed in March 2019. The contract also includes a provision for additional revenue when the orchestra reaches certain fundraising benchmarks and expands the size of the orchestra. Inter-union cooperation and negotiations with their employers allow professionals to speak with a stronger collective voice than one might hope.
